Crustal xenoliths in alkali basalts in Southern Slovakia
Plio-Pleistocene alkali basalt volcanism in southern Slovakia is characterised by the presence of various volcanic phreatomagmatic structures. One important feature of these basalts is the presence of crustal xenoliths. Various magmatic xenolith types have already been described and very well characterized. The literature on metamorphic xenoliths of this region, (e.g. skarn and granulite xenoliths) is not as complete as the one relative to magmatic xenoliths. These xenoliths were not studied in equal extent, and therefore leave us with a series of unanswered questions, the main two, are: what is the history of these xenoliths? And what can they tell us about the deeper parts of the Southern Slovakia crust, and its evolution? This PhD project will be focused on determining the mineralogy, petrology and geothermobarometry of the metamorphic xenoliths present in the Plio-Pleistocenic Slovakian alkali basalts. Experimental procedures will focus on the use of the Electron Microprobe (EMP), to determine the major elements compositions of the various minerals of interest, mainly for geothermobarometry.
